My iPod produces static or distorted sounds when I play music out of the headphone jack.

This definitely means you will just need a new headphone jack.

Well the other things you can try would be :

- Make sure your headphones are good, try a different set and see if you get different results.
- Make sure the song being played is a "clean" recording and not full of static.
